"It’s hard to find words other than 'love' to describe her. " |

Remembering Sister Eugenia... |
|
“I remember her coming to a meeting
in my apartment. Here was this little short woman who was so interested in
hearing about Sanctuary of Hope. Her eyes were smiling. The more she heard
of the mission, the more she wanted to be a part of it.” |
 |
“She touched my life. When
I started working here I had never been around Catholics much. Sister said
to me, “There is only one Father, one Son, and one Holy Spirit, and don’t
you forget it.” Whatever was going on, she would get in the midst of it.
You know we’re children of God, here to do His work.” |
| “Sister came to Sanctuary of Hope in the
early years before the building was refurbished. She came with nothing but
a little sack with her clothing. The rest of us who came to live here
brought our own furniture. Sister had no furniture. We found an old bed
and made her a makeshift nightstand from a box. The first room was too cold
because the radiator didn’t work. She moved three times until we found a
room that was suitable to live in. Those were hard beginnings.” |
|

|
| “After Carole went to the
Lord, Sister arranged for me to make a retreat. It turned out to be a
silent retreat—me and 35 women—most of them nuns. But it turned out great.
I remember driving with her when we saw that perfect butterfly in the
clouds.” |
“One Easter the
services began outside. It was cold. My dad was all bundled up.
Sister turned to him and said, “I wish they’d end this. It’s cold.
It’s time to go in where it’s warm.”

“I first came to Sanctuary of Hope to do
some plastering. That day there was a gathering in the dining room for
Sister’s birthday. I was just going to grab a cup of coffee, but I got
caught up in the celebration. I got little work done that day.
