Welcome to the month of October! We are grateful to the Lord of the Harvest for the crops, the rains, and all those who come to Sanctuary of Hope to find quiet and peace. I was grateful to have had time to pray and share with my brother priests at Conception Abbey as we all reflected on wellness in the presbyterate.

I want to thank all of you who are responding to our request for moneys for the building fund, used to provide permanent quarters for Bernadine Asher and Sister Mary Eugenia Floersch, SCL at Sanctuary of Hope. From our membership so far, we have received around $10,000 toward the bid of $50,000...Wow and Praise the Lord!

We are also grateful to God for the countless hours that many volunteers are making on an on-going basis to reduce our costs and bring this ancient building up to code. This, together with the professional donations from Triad Construction Company, Mr. Rooter Plumbing Company, J. R. Electric Company and our volunteer professional workers, enables us to accomplish the task of renovation.

Jeff, Kelly, Steven, Bernadine, Sister Mary Eugenia and I invite you to come and see the new improvements that are happening weekly at Sanctuary of Hope. The new front porch doors look beautiful and thanks to our women volunteers the woodwork in the living room, entry way, new office and conference rooms looks so rich with the new light wood stains. The Northeast Wing is really taking shape as I write. The connecting hallway between Bernadine and Sister’s quarters looks like a tin ceiling due to new tile and lowered ceiling. It is so inviting. Mike Forsythe and Associates, a small computer company business, has volunteered to do the painting and refurbishing of the woodwork in the Northeast Wing as a family project and the Jay Narvaez Family has completed the painting of the living room...Wow and Praise the Lord! Just come and sit on the porch, enjoy the swing and the glider.

At our September Pastoral Council meeting, with the Board of Trustees present, we decided that we would like to extend our outreach for prayer requests. Since we have a website, we invite anyone to send prayer requests through the website at www.sanctuaryofhope.org. It’s amazing to see the many requests coming in from letters, phone calls, e-mail and from each other in person. You are also invited to join our Prayer Group, which meets every Tuesday, from 10 to 11:30 AM. It’s a joy to see God responding to these prayers: people being healed of deep hurts; some physical healing; strength to go forward with life! I do ask for your prayers for Steve Sumner, a dear friend of ours, who had a heart valve replaced last month. May God regulate his heart beat and grant a full recovery.

At our priests’ workshop, we heard this statement. "The movement of grace within moves us to solitude or intimacy; if it is blocked it leads to isolation." Our presenters told us that burnout is not a matter of overwork, but rather a lack of intimacy. It’s our prayer that you and those you love and serve find deep intimacy within yourselves, with others and with God (solitude). Thank you for being human and vulnerable!

Love and Prayers,
Fr. Dennis Wait,

Charismatic Renewal Retreat
at Sanctuary of Hope
by Kelly Ashton

"Holy Spirit, Thou art welcome in this place……" Though the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit always maintain a felt presence at Sanctuary of Hope, the Holy Spirit has perhaps never been as powerful a presence as He was the weekend of September 16 and 17 when the Diocesan Charismatic Renewal held their annual Retreat at SOH. Nearly 80 persons gathered each day for the activities, with 22 persons utilizing the overnight accommodations available at SOH.

Father Dennis Wait served as Retreat-Master, choosing "Contentment in the Holy Spirit" as the theme. Each of the three sessions he presented focused on a different perspective of that contentment: the faith perspective, the hope perspective, and the love perspective – and they were presented in a way that can come only from Fr. Dennis! A few of the "holy pearls of wisdom" he shared (many gleaned from and/or inspired by Margins by Richard Swenson, M.D.) are:

"God is in charge, not me (or you)!"

"In everyone, the Risen Jesus is fully hidden, fully revealed!"

"Discontent, as a driving force, may make a person / society rich, but in the end will bankrupt it!"

"Contentment is accepting from God’s hand what He sends because we know "it" and God is good!"

"The more content we become, the freer God makes us. But, contentment does NOT free us from pain…..look at Jesus; look at Paul; look at other holy men and women."

"In contentment, we do NOT deny our feelings of unhappiness, but we are not CONTROLLED by them; we don’t live or preach that things are right when they are not; it is knowing that in the midst of everything, good and bad, that God works out all problems! Not all of our needs and desires (as we see them) are met, but that IN GOD, WE HAVE ALL THINGS in One!!!"

" It is better to be surrounded by a community of like-minded friends than a society where "envy" has been normalized."

"The products of contentment are: Freedom, gratitude, rest, peace, good health…resulting in better relationships with God, self, and others."

"Contentment is not in what is yours, but in WHOSE you are!"

"Contentment, like love, is a matter of choice – of will! When we choose obedience, God surprises us and redeems pain and suffering. All things work together for the good of those who love God!"

"Put God at the center of your life and build out from there….God will give us the focus to build loving relationships….be kind to yourself and trust!"

"Dismiss all anxiety and worry from your minds. The God of Peace will be with you! Love those close to you and those far off; even those who persecute you. Forgive!"

Each session was separated by music, singing, and personal time. The Sounds of Joy, long associated with the Charismatic Renewal, provided a "joyful noise" with their spirit-filled music. Bernadine Asher, Associate Spiritual Director of SOH, was among those sharing their musical talents. Because God provided such a glorious day, the SOH grounds were utilized by all for time to pray, read, enjoy the beauty of God’s creation, and to meditate and reflect on the messages of the day.

Guided by the Holy Spirit, a powerful Healing of Memories service was facilitated by the SOH staff (Fr. Dennis, Sr. Eugenia, Bernadine, Jeff, and Kelly) on Saturday evening. Many shared their life experiences, both joyful and painful, in small groups throughout the service, and many experienced the healing touch of God.

A beautiful Mass, celebrated by Fr. Dennis, served as the dynamic conclusion to this Spirit-filled weekend. The Mass began in the SOH Chapel with lively songs of praise and worship. After partaking of the Eucharist, all processed outdoors to Our Lady’s Shrine where the Sign of Peace and Closing Prayers were shared, followed by farewells as our guests disbursed. Our entire SOH staff felt blessed to be a part of such a special weekend!

We proceeded on faith to renovate the Northeast wing following the September appeal because our mission required the rooms that Bernadine and Sr. Eugenia are occupying as living quarters for use by people we serve. Besides, they have lived like transients long enough. You can see that we have:

<— Filled the hole shown in the last newsletter...and

Provided a place for Sr. Eugenia to shower and bathe —>

New problems pop-up as construction proceeds but we will continue by faith and eventually the Northeast wing will be fully renovated. There is already a small meditation chapel to augment the main chapel as well as a nearly finished living room and office area. Brick tuck-pointing is even helping to preserve the building integrity!

Building Fund donations appreciated.

This picture shows assistant, Matt at work tiling the first stairway landing, the elevator after tiling and Alan Caldwell, owner of C & C Flooring, of Shawnee Mission in the process of laying tiles at the doorway to the middle floor. The two landings and three floors of this project plus the elevator were made possible by the generous response to the "Wish-List" request for $650 plus the expert labor donation by Alan.

Angels Visited the September Associates Meeting

Angel theology and experiences were the topic at the September "associates" meeting. Angels have long been at work within the operations of Sanctuary of Hope. It was most enlightening to hear our own stories...

<— Bernadine Asher’s collection of angels illustrated very well the different forms as messengers of God that Angels have taken (and continue to take) as they provide that relationship between you and me and our Creator...
