Welcome to the Holy Season of Lent! One of my favorite days in Lent is February 14th.
It begins the joyful week. This year the joyful week includes some of my favorite saints:
Patrick, Joseph and Benedict. Don’t forget the saintly women behind them as well:
Bridgit,
Mary and Scholastica. The note of joy at this time is due to the truth that Jesus will rise
from the dead just as He told us. “Without this hope our faith is vain,” says St. Paul.
All of us at Sanctuary of Hope want people to know this joy when they visit our place and
meet the Lord in surprising ways. We want people to sense that there is a light at the end
of the tunnel of life and that in accepting our faults and weaknesses, Jesus can rise again
in each of us.
Last month, our staff went to celebrate a Healing Mass with Fr. Peter Mary Rookey at
Cure´ of rs Church in Leawood, KS. Fr. Rookey is a Servite of Mary priest from the
Chicago area and has the anointing of the Holy Spirit upon him. There were about 1,000
people who attended. Father gave us a one liner to summarize what he had been preaching:
“To hate is ugly, to love is beautiful.” There is a poetic meter in these words. The
first set (to hate is ugly) seems to take the lower tone of the voice while the later
(to love is beautiful) is definitely higher and richer in sound. I don’t know where the
time went, but after four hours of a Servite Rosary, the Eucharist, people being slain
in the Spirit right and left and Benediction, I and many others felt the joy of being loved
by God. Or, as Father said to us, “Just relax and enjoy the presence of the Holy Spirit.”
I propose that all of us just relax this holy season. Let us truly enjoy the presence of
the Holy Spirit. As Father Rookey and I talked while in the sacristy before the Eucharist,
he told me that it’s a joy being a priest.
I wholeheartedly agree with him. Mary, our mother and St. Joseph knew this same joy and
so did Benedict and Scholastica. This joy of the Father, which Jesus came to demonstrate
beyond measure by His own suffering, death and new life, is what motivated people like
St. Patrick and St. Bridgit to take on the Emerald Isle. It’s joy you see in a child
cuddled in the parent’s arms and the gleam in Mom and Dad’s eye. It’s joy that sweeps
lovers off their feet. It’s joy watching one you love and being still in the presence of God.
As we now watch the coming of Spring, the blossoms on the trees coming forth, getting
excited about the Lord who will rise again, do come by ole Sanctuary of Hope for a visit.
I know you will enjoy the upcoming Taize´ prayer Experience March 19th on the Feast of St.
Joseph. The Taize´ chants, prayers, hymns and inspired songs will lead you into that joy
that only God can give.
Love and Prayers,

On Friday evening, March 19th, at 7 PM, Sanctuary of Hope will offer Prayer
in the Taize´ tradition. Taize´ Prayer includes silence, scripture and chants.
It originated in France after World War II. The monastery near Cluny draws 4000
to 6000 people every week, many of them young adults, from all over the world.
The bells call-out over the countryside three times a day, gathering long lines
of worshippers, to the amazement of tourists and visitors.
Taize´ Prayer is similar to the Liturgy of the Hours, the prayer which priests,
nuns and monks and many lay people have used for centuries, but with more emphasis
on the chanting.
The repetition of the chants fosters communion with God and the music sings on long
afterwards in one’s own heart.
Some familiar Taize´ chants are Veni Sancte Spiritus, Adoramus te Christe´ and Stay With Me.
Rick and Penny Torretto are the Worship Leaders and Barbara Harrison will provide the music.
A free will offering will be taken and refreshments will be provided after the devotions.
Please join us for this occasion and bring a friend along with you.
Peace, Bernadine Asher
Our Meditation in Music and Movement event was invaded by the Holy Spirit.
It was a time of deep spiritual union with our God.
Some comments of those who attended were:
"I felt God was there."
"It was very moving."
"I would invite anyone to come and have the opportunity to experience the joy I felt."
"I'm glad I went."
"I hope this is a yearly event."
"All the performers were wonderful."
We are truly thankful for the dedication of Marilyn Connolly and her committee
in making this event so memorable. We also thank the House of David for the use
of their magnificent banner honoring Yeshua Messiah
High Tea was served following the performances
It consisted of cookies, cucumber sandwiches, nuts and mints plus tea and punch.
This fellowship and refreshment combined with the talented performances was
in the words of Corky Stueve, "A real celebration of life!"
