Welcome to the month of June! In the Catholic Tradition, this month is dedicated to Jesus Christ, under His title as the "Sacred Heart." This is one of my favorite titles for Jesus. For I continue to tuck so many of you and your intentions into His sacred heart. This is the heart that is open to all that simply ask, seek and knock at his door.

Sanctuary of Hope was proud to host 50 Buddhists and their teacher (lama) from Tibet. The lama had all his fingers broken, because he wouldn't deny his belief. He is such a gentle man with powerful insights for meditation. He blest Bernadine and then Bernadine and I did a prayer-dance for all of them, called "namaste" (which means I bow to the God in you). When I greeted him, I silently prayed God would restore his fingers.

Sanctuary of Hope hosted professionals from the Wyandotte Mental Health organization in our community and some 20 graduates of Queen of the Holy Rosary Elementary School in Overland Park, KS. You can begin to see the diversity that God is working with at our place.

I have been doubly blest by all this and just returned from the Holy Land. All I can say is Wow and Thanks be to God, who is always faithful to those who love God! As I travel and reflect on life, I find that the world really is a village of brothers and sisters, with one God over us all. Thanks for all your prayers and for taking good care of Sanctuary of Hope while I was away.

After walking on holy land, I sure invite all of you to join with John Michael Talbot and myself to walk the holy ground of our two Kansas Cities on June 26th Saturday, from 9 to noon. This walk is a dream of John Michael Talbot, founder of a community of Faith and Prayer in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, called the Brothers and Sisters of Love. John Michael, a converted rock star and a man after God's own heart, and I both believe that God wants us to step out into our cities and pray with the people. This we will do with all of you who come to the walk.

To launch the walk on the morning of the 26th of June and to prepare our hearts for prayer, we will host a concert by John Michael Talbot and his community on our grounds on Friday, June 25th, at 7 PM. Whether you have heard John Michael sing or not, it will be a treat. John Michael invites people to enter into the presence of God, by his singing and praying. He can catch this glimpse of God in the stars, the constellations or in a person who is invited to come to eat at the table of plenty. The concert will be held outside on our front lawn...with parking in our 5 acre lot or City Park next to us. We will ask for your free-will offerings.

Peace be with you, Shalom or Salem as they say in the East...
Peace in the Holy Spirit of the Risen Jesus and the Father.

Love and Prayers.

Concert at SOH By Donna Cermak

Talbot's music has evolved from his early rock styling toward a more reflective, meditative ballad style which combines his rich tenor vocals with sophisticated classical guitar playing. He is known for creating albums designed for worship as well as quiet, meditative recordings. His newest project, Pathways to Wisdom, is an instrumental album designed to bring the listener before the throne of God through quiet contemplation It is the first in a series of six instrumental albums released in 1998.

John Michael Talbot took vows of poverty, chastity and obedience when he joined a secular Franciscan order 19 years ago, but he never pledged to shun the spotlight. "If you have something good, you're not afraid to share it," says the 44-year-old Dove Award winning monk.

These days, Talbot spends about a week each month on the road, carrying with him a radical concern for what's happening in North America. "I think people are frightened," he says. "Society is degenerating at a frightening pace. People are scared. They're confused. I sense people are hungry for roots, a sense of tradition that's not stuck, but is tested."

When not on the road, Talbot can be found at his Eureka Springs retreat, praying, meditating and remembering that he's a monk first, a troubadour second. "You can't get too big a head living in a place like this," he says. "A Christian community is like sandpaper. There are too many brothers and sisters who call you on the carpet if you get a little haughty."

John Michael Talbot Concert & Peace-Walk By Bernadine Asher

John Michael Talbot, Christian recording artist from Eureka Springs, Arkansas, will give a concert June 23, 1999 at 7 p.m. on the lawn of Sanctuary of Hope, 2601 Ridge Ave. in Kansas City, KS. Talbot's music is meditative and peaceful. Many of the lyrics are straight from Scripture.

In 1972 John Michael was on the brink of stardom with the Mason Profit Rock Band, when "suddenly" he said, "all seemed empty and sad." Talbot began a spiritual journey. In addition to his Methodist background, he explored Native American religions, Buddhism, and the Bible given to him by his grandmother. After three years, Talbot and his brother Terry joined the Jesus movement, writing and recording contemporary Christian music. Also at that time, drawn by the life of St. Francis of Assisi, Talbot studied at a Franciscan retreat center in Indianapolis and joined the Franciscans in 1978.

In 1982, with six others, John Michael founded the Little Portion Hermitage in Eureka Springs, Arkansas on mountainous land he had purchased in his rock star days. Today, the Brothers and Sisters of Charity Community has 37 members in Arkansas and 500 worldwide. While unique, John Michael's community is similar to the Sanctuary of Hope Community in that married, widowed, single, vowed and ordained all live together in community, sharing and enriching each others' lives with their varied talents and life experiences. Father Dennis visited the Arkansas community three years ago while Sanctuary of Hope was in its infancy. It was then that John Michael volunteered to give a concert at SOH.

John Michael has great concern for the people of North America. Therefore he has led simple and peaceful prayer walks in seven cities, including San Francisco and Philadelphia, to combat the rising violence on our city streets. On Saturday, June 26, there will be 2 Prayer Walks.

John Michael Talbot will lead the Kansas City, Missouri Walk beginning at 9 a.m. at Guardian Angels Church, Westport and Mercier. Parking is available in the church lot.

The Prayer Walk in Kansas City, KS, led by Father Dennis Wait, begins at 9 a.m. at Huron Park, Sixth and Armstrong. The route circles for two miles past significant sites like the EPA and the Food Kitchen. Prayer at various stops will be led by inner city pastors.

Both walks will meet after 11 a.m. for a short closing prayer service at St. John Baptist Park at Fourth and Ann at the confluence of the two rivers and overlooking the two cities. Parking is reserved at the southwest corner of the Reardon Center Parking lot at Fifth and Minnesota for the prayer service and KS walkers.
