Welcome to Pentecost! The Father and Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit and this Advocate is truly here with us. It is our task to invoke the Holy Spirit in all the decisions of our lives to give us discernment in our relationships with God and each other. So when we feel a tug at our heart or a desire to take action; just say: "Come Holy Spirit and enkindle the fire of your love in me." To me one of the true signs of the Holy Spirit is when I feel a sense of freedom in my life. This is what I will in my heart of hearts. It is the decision of the Holy Spirit and me with the Church Family to move in this direction. It’s like living the Acts of the Apostles!

Standing in the Holy Spirit and having the anointing of God, I have some concerns in my heart to share with all of you that are supporting the mission of Sanctuary of Hope. First of all, the live-ins and I want you to know that you are always welcome to participate in the events at SOH. We have Mass at 7:30 AM on Tuesdays and Thursdays. On weekends we encourage everyone, even ourselves, to go to their own parishes, churches and places of worship. If you enjoy Morning and Evening Prayer, then please join us on Tuesdays thru Fridays at 7 AM and 5 PM. We are closed on Mondays, so the staff can have time to rest. You are also welcome to come to our Associate Meetings, which take place on the fourth Saturdays of the month, from 10 AM to 12 Noon, and help with our workdays on the second Saturdays of the month, from 8 AM to 1 PM. Lunch is included. Our Pastoral Council and Board of Trustees meets at 7 PM on the third Wednesdays of the month, except for July and August. We also have our monthly prayer groups that meet as follows: HIV/AIDS meets on the second Wednesday of the month at 7 PM, RECOVERY + meets on the fourth Tuesday of the month at 7:30 PM and our BIPOLAR group meets as they advertise, sometimes for retreats and sometimes for social gatherings. I hope this helps you.

Secondly, we have been given an opportunity, with some memorial funds that have come into SOH, to build a new shrine on our property. What we would like to do is to have a sculpture of the burning bush, which is the logotype or symbol of SOH.

We have an artist, Matt Kirby, from Baldwin City, KS, who is willing to make the sculpture. Matt has already presented to us an illustration, drawn by Cathy Ledeker of Lawrence, KS. In order to do the proper thing in getting this shrine of the burning bush, it takes money to run the electrical outlet to the far South hill of our property where the bush could be seen from I-70. The sculpture would be of bronze, strong hand blown glass and cement lit by halogen lights and lights within the colored glass pieces of the heart, the flames and the leaves. When you come to SOH, you can see the illustrations of what we are thinking about. I do ask for your input on this matter and your prayers.

Thirdly, we are trying, as you will see from Bernadine’s article to move ahead with the renovation of the second floor of the NE Wing of the building in order to provide room for two more live-ins at SOH. This would give us more staff to do the work of welcoming retreatants. We sure hope we can get a reduced bid to begin such a project in the fall of this year. Please pray for discernment. We are also open to your input in this matter as well.

Lastly, I have always been dreaming about taking inner city people to the Holy Land. I have put this off for the last few years in order to get SOH off the ground. Well, an opportunity for this pilgrimage came up for Nov 5 to 19 of this year. Rick and Penny Torretto would be our leaders and I would be the chaplain.

We need about 25 people to sign up as paying members in order to have the pilgrimage. I have sent letters to some of you inviting you on this pilgrimage. If anyone else is interested, please let me know as soon as possible. In order for some of our inner city people to go, I need to raise funds for scholarships. The overall cost per person is $3000. So I humbly ask you that if you are interested in sending an inner city person to the Holy Land, would you please send me the money and I will put it in a fund and see how many people can go. Right now I have four people who have requested scholarships. I have told them that I can’t promise anything, but will ask for the money. Even a local Church or a business could send a scholarship for an individual to go.

Again may the Holy Spirit of the Living God reward each of you for all your acts of kindness, your prayers and your willingness to be a witness for the Lord in our world today.

Love and Prayers,

Fr. Dennis Wait

Treetop Village Resort
"Imagine a Place
for a week-long luxury vacation"
by Eugene Lipscomb

Sanctuary of Hope (SOH) has again received a donation of a timeshare at Treetop Village Resort located in Lake Ozark, Mo. which it will use to raise funds to continue renovation of the facility. The donors suggest you simply have to "imagine a place":

Imagine a place nestled in the woods surrounded by tall oak and cedar trees overlooking a lake with calm ripples that gently hug the rock cliffs and tree shoreline.

Imagine the weather during the first week of October when the mild and cool fall air has pushed the summer heat away.

Imagine the peace, tranquility and a place where you can contemplate your gifts, blessings and things you desire.

Imagine participating in water sports such as fishing, swimming, sailing or simply enjoying watching others do so.

Welcome to Treetop Village, a lakeside resort!

The unit is fully equipped consisting of two bedrooms and three bathrooms with accommodations for six people. The week starts Friday, September 30th and ends Friday, October 7th. The Treetop Village Resort includes tennis courts, basketball courts, swimming pools (one indoors) and more. The resort is located near grocery and other shopping including the Outlet Mall consisting of 110 stores located in Osage Beach, MO.

The fund-raiser was a great success [last year] as SOH raised almost $4,000 and the lucky winner of the drawing and guest enjoyed their stay very much. Winner or not your purchase of raffle tickets for $2 each will help fund the next stage of the renovations of SOH.

The drawing is set for 12:00 Noon on Saturday, July 14, 2001 and an individual need not be present to win. However, all persons are encouraged to be present on that day and take advantage of the opportunity to tour the beautiful facility, grounds and learn more about SOH.

A booklet of five tickets has been included with this letter and completed raffle ticket stubs and checks should be returned to SOH, Timeshare, 2601 Ridge Avenue, Kansas City, KS 66102.

Archbishop Keleher Celebrates National Day of Prayer

by Marilyn Connolly

Archbishop James Keleher of the Kansas City in Kansas archdiocese led Sanctuary of Hope’s celebration of the National Day of Prayer on May 3 at the regular 7:30 AM Mass. Father Dennis concelebrated and about 60 community members attended.

The archbishop expressed his thanksgiving and appreciation to all SOH staff and volunteers. With a twinkle in his eye he said, "You have given a new meaning to the word renovation." He seemed relaxed and joyful especially when Bernadine gave him a SOH tee shirt, some of our honey and candles from our own beeswax. Since his father worked for the Will & Baumer candle company, the archbishop appreciated what he called "the real thing."

In his sermon Archbishop Keleher shared how aware he is this year of how grace-filled are the 50 days of Easter. The Apostles personally experienced the risen Jesus with His wounds several times, saw Him ascend to the Father, gathered in the upper room to pray and be together. Then the Holy Spirit came to them on Pentecost and they were fearful no longer and went out to preach and baptize as Jesus had commanded. The Archbishop emphasized the importance of a personal relationship with Jesus first and foremost. He said we also need to experience the risen Jesus, to gather together as Church in community as we do at Sanctuary of Hope, and to witness our faith in Jesus to others, especially by our lives.

As usual on Thursday morning, breakfast was served after Mass. Archbishop and most people stayed to eat and look around.

Sanctuary of Hope is Host to Youths by Marilyn Connolly

More and more youth are coming to SOH for day long retreats. O’Hara High School has had several earlier this year. Children preparing to make their First Communion at St. Pius made communion bread. Eighth graders from St. Pius, Our Lady of Presentation and Ascension also came in May. St. Mark’s Confirmation class and Cory Sorio’s youth group even stayed overnight. Twenty Presbyterian youth from Nebraska stayed two nights to attend the "Acquire the Fire" retreat at the municipal auditorium.

Young people from Bishop Miege High School and individual youth helped at work days. And Sanctuary of Hope continues to benefit from Scouts doing Eagle projects on our grounds. Ted Kellerman is restoring the Bishop’s well. Evan Needham is completing the east trail. The Strick twins renewed the flag pole and the surrounding area. Kyle Cavaness and Tom Messner are both creating shelters for our life-sized statues on the trails and Nick Ostmeter is continuing the West trail.

Facilities Meeting Report by Bernadine Asher

Sanctuary of Hope has two offers of help this summer from professionals: Tom Nadler of Triad Construction and Ralph Swartwood of Good Shepherd Parish. The Committee met to prioritize jobs.

Decided on: as high priority was enlarging space on the ground level to make room for Kelly’s quilting machine. This will empty the Northeast wing on the second floor for renovation to provide space for two more live-ins.

Decided on: as lesser priority to renovate the old office room for use as a retreat room. The old Copy room will be used temporarily for storage.

Decided to: ask John Newhouse to begin removing the old plumbing in the two storage ("history") rooms on the first and second floors in preparation to install four more bathrooms for retreatant convenience.

Planned are: lights for the Garden House, garages and outside shrines. Scott Gilsdorf has offered to do the trenching for the conduits.

Smaller jobs: discussed are door knob for the utility room door, repair of broken ropes in some of the windows and cutting a doorway between rooms 212 & 213 and rooms 104 & 105.

We wish we had:

Two or three 6 to 8 foot folding "cafeteria" tables and one or two more card tables.
A small stand-alone ice machine.
Food warming pans (with stands, sterno or candles etc.)
Someone to come twice a week to water plants during the hot weather this summer.

A light house-keeper 20 hours per week for $7 per hour.
