Welcome to Summer! Wow, where does the time go? I want to
deeply thank each one of you for all the labors of love you have given to the
mission of Sanctuary of Hope. I know the Lord and Our Lady are pleased with the
incredible way this very young ministry has been unfolding, since we first began
to share the dream seven years ago, in 1994. I know that we have all grown; that
we have all struggled; that we have all given in ways that would stagger
conventional wisdom. But by the grace of God and the countless volunteers who
have prayed for us; died for us; worked for us; worried for us; rejoiced with
us; and continue to persevere; the mission of Sanctuary of Hope goes forward.
Today as I write this article, we have the Filipino Youth
Group spending the weekend here. They have come from different areas in the KC
metroplex and are trying to meet each other for the first time; grow in their
heritage and sense how loved they are by God. They have such a gentle spirit
among them and the sense of family is quite evident. They have invited our staff
to the meals and they are excellent. I can’t tell you how many different
people from such diverse backgrounds have been staying at SOH. I continue to
rejoice that all God’s children are welcome here and it is our solemn pledge
to keep this going forward. For I know in my heart of hearts that there is only
one Family of God and one day all of us will see this no matter where we are in
Heaven and on the Earth. I was taught this lesson, early on in our beginnings,
when Estrella Bechelmayr came to work here, with no complaints and filled with
the love of Christ. For me and many others who love her, she is a saint now home
with Jesus and interceding for all of us and her dear family and community of
people in America and the Philippines. As it says in the Book of Wisdom 7: 26
and 29: "she is in the image of God’s goodness and she is a star among
all the constellations."
I leave soon for Colorado for a family reunion in Buena
Vista. I will surely keep all of you in my prayers as I return to a place that
has always been a source of healing for myself. As I climb the mountains and
fish the streams, you will all be with me. I go to the mountains so that I can
get a "good view" of what the Lord is speaking in my heart. I have
friends there who are like family to me as well and sometimes I can’t even
tell one from the other. I had a dream recently about gold fish swimming beneath
me in a river and then all of a sudden one came out of the water and came up to
me with its mouth wide open. Wow, if I could catch fish like that! I will be
looking for some manifestation in nature of God’s surprising presence. Fish
have been a symbol to me of priesthood and my inner journey.
There is much ahead for all of us, but the journey is a real
joy to me when I see people like yourselves and your commitment to life and to
God. I feel so small in such a immense world as ours. Lord, as you well know,
"my boat is so small and your ocean so large." But as my nephew, John
Wait, once told me (when he was teaching his uncle to water ski): "relax,
Uncle Dennis and don’t try to fight the boat"..and when I finally did
relax; I was up and skiing. Wow and Praise the Lord!
Don’t forget on Saturday, August 25th, we will have an
appreciation luncheon for all our volunteers over these seven years, from 10 AM
to 1 PM. We just don’t say "muchisimas gracias" enough to you, so
come and enjoy. Bring your spouse and your children too. Bring a friend. We will
just open up the place to all of you who have gone that extra mile that Our Lord
spoke of to His disciples too.
Love and Prayers,
Fr. Dennis Wait
Though each precious person who enters the gates of Sanctuary of Hope is a blessing to us, there is nothing quite like hearing the "pitter-patter of little (and not-so-little) feet" through the SOH hallways and around the grounds. The energy and enthusiasm brought by persons in the 3 - 18 year-old age range is absolutely tangible and adds an element of vitality, intrigue, and curiosity that is unique to persons of that age group. Many of the youth groups gracing our space were preparing for Confirmation. They came from both Kansas Cities, Mission, Overland Park, Lee’s Summit, Independence - different geographic locations but all with a common goal: to learn more about and grow closer to Jesus in their spiritual journey. We also were privileged to have a First Communion preparation group from St. Pius X in Mission, KS. What a joy it was to see these second-graders decorating their "Jesus bags", making communion bread, and spending time praising the Lord!
Groups from the Junior class at O’Hara came with adults and Senior class leaders to reflect on the transition into their Senior year and the life choices which were before them. How wonderful to see prayer and Biblical principles used to encourage these youth in their personal growth!
If we had a prize for the youth group traveling the farthest distance, it would go to the Presbyterian Youth Group from Omaha, NE. These youth came to the metro area to attend the Acquire the Fire conference held in Kansas City, MO in April and stayed at SOH. Despite limited time for sleep, many of them arose early on Sunday morning before another busy day to attend morning prayer with the SOH staff. WOW!
For the fourth year running, children from Friends of Yates have come to SOH to share in a variety of musical, art and nature-appreciation activities. It is such a blessing for us to have the opportunity to get to know some of the children of our inner-city. And, for the third year in a row, youth and young adults from the Filipino Association of Greater Kansas City have come to spend a weekend at SOH to learn more about their culture and faith traditions. The SOH staff receive such blessings, too, as we learn more about our Filipino brothers and sisters. Tai Chi has never been so beautiful as when performed on the holy ground of Sanctuary of Hope!
Many of the aforementioned groups gave of themselves while at SOH by doing service projects during their stay. Additionally, we continue to have many youth, individually and in groups, give of themselves on workdays and other pre-arranged times. Eagle Scout projects also continue to blossom on the grounds of Sanctuary of Hope. Blessings abound in the presence of the young and in the work that they do!
In a time when we hear so many negative stories about the youth of today, we were uplifted and impressed by the depth of faith and true goodness exemplified by these children and young adults. Based upon what I’ve seen, I think the future of our nation is falling into some pretty special and wonderful hands. Unlike another phrase I’ve often heard, I believe our youth are headed to HEAVEN in a hand-basket!
