Welcome to the summer! One only has to try to walk a few feet in this heat and you know what month it is. I would like to dedicate this summer of 1999 to the Transfiguration of Jesus on Mount Tabor, celebrated on Friday, August 6, in the Roman liturgical calendar. When we said Mass this past May at Tabor, we could sense the majesty of God, overlooking the immense plain of Jezreel (Armageddon). May the heat of this season, the weakness of our human lives, the brokenness of the poor and the rich, be transfigured, transformed into the Glory of the Lord!

We, the Sanctuary of Hope Family, were so grateful that John Michael Talbot and twelve of the Brothers and Sisters of Charity could join us for a concert and prayer walk this past month of June. We had around 900 people come for the concert on our grounds. Our deepest thanks to all who helped make this possible. We continue to receive letters and phone calls about how much people were touched by both events. John Michael told us that when you make a prayer walk be aware of where your feet are walking and what you observe along the way. You quickly begin to see that we have built walls of isolation in place of bridges. So let us come out of our comfortable homes and meet the neighbor next door. Let us each see what we can do to help out the greater community in which we live. I personally was so proud of the area pastors who joined us for prayer along the walk and people in our group who weren’t afraid to speak a prayer at different stops along the way. It was Peter who said to Jesus, "Lord it is good to be here." It is good to be here with each other in our city, walking with the Jesus of Mount Tabor!

We want to welcome Jeff Seib, Kelly Ashton and Steven, who will be moving to Sanctuary of Hope by mid August. This will bring our live-ins to a total of 5 adults and one child. We are so happy to have them with us. They will remain parishioners of Queen of the Holy Rosary Church in Overland Park, and Steven will continue to attend school at Queen.

Several have asked about the Mission of Sanctuary of Hope and how the new Bed and Breakfast for retreat purposes will fit under the umbrella of our place as a retreat center. The Board of Trustees would like to answer that question and any others that the wider family of Sanctuary of Hope may have. All are invited to the Associate Gathering on September 25th, Saturday, from 10AM to noon at SOH. Do come and meet the Board. The Board has the responsibility to set policy and make sure that we are living out our Mission Statement.

Don’t forget the Mexican Dinner on Saturday, September 11, starting at 4 PM and the Associate Gathering on Saturday, September 25, at 10 AM. We would like to have a large turn out for both, food for the body and food for the soul.

By the way, I’m in my new quarters and am so grateful to God and all of you who helped me occupy this space. You are welcome to visit.

Love and Prayers.

Meet the Associates By Carol Loechler

On Saturday, July 24th, we traveled to Conception, Missouri to visit the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception. Basilica, a title meaning royal house, was bestowed on the church in 1941 by Pope Pius XII due to the intense spiritual life that exists within it and the pilgrimages that take place within and around it.

The Basilicas murals are the most striking feature of its interior decorations. They include eighteen Beuronese-style murals depicting the life of Mary and four scenes from the life of St. Benedict.

Brother Elijah led us in a guided tour showing the recently completed four year renovation. We attended Mass and had lunch together in the guest dining facilities.

The fourth Saturday of each month is the gathering time for us to come together to grow spiritually. We provide spiritual formation by programs, speakers and prayer experiences. We encourage community spirit by attendance at these gatherings, praying together and caring for each other.

As commissioned associates we are asked to:

1. Pray for SOH and help the live-ins fulfill their ministry.

2. Have community prayer and sharing on the fourth Saturday of each month.

3. Contribute time, talent and treasures according to our abilities.

4. Help in various rooms and grounds of SOH and provide transportation.

Coming programs are A Spiritual Journaling Workshop on August 24 presented by Patricia Callaghan. An opportunity on September 25 to Meet Our Board of Trustees and discuss any concerns about our Mission, On-going Construction and Future Plans. Then on October 23 we will have a Workshop On Dreams presented by Sister Terese Elias OSB.

If you are interested in learning more about becoming an SOH volunteer or commissioned associate please come to our gathering or call 321-HOPE.

Sanctuary Of Hope Goes On-Line By Tom Gilbert

June 25th, 1999 was a significant day for SOH because of the John Michael Talbot concert and next day’s prayer walk. Behind the scenes it was also significant for the official issuance of our world wide web domain name. As an “ORG” i.e.: non-profit ORGanization, 3 letter names like SOH.ORG start at $3000. Rather than risk confusion with hybrids like “SOHKCKS.ORG, we chose and were granted the fully spelled-out name without spaces. You can find us at http://www.SanctuaryOfHope.org or to make it simple, just enter “sanctuaryofhope” (without the quotes) in the address field of your Internet browser. Once you see the familiar “Holy Ground” logo, add the address to your “Favorites” or “BookMarks.”

There is something else we would like you to do for us besides visiting and advertising our website. We have made the initial decision that simpler is better and avoided “fancy” moving stuff and cascading style pages. You may even find it too plain. Please use the “TMGilbert@SanctuaryOfHope.org” hyperlink to send opinions and comments. We will probably add some structured questionnaires and/or polls eventually but would like to start with your free-form honest opinions. The pages on the site, to begin with, include the Home, Map, Brochure, Feedback, Newsletters and Photo Tour. There can be as many as necessary to achieve our purposes. Let us know what to add, what to revise and what to eliminate. If you see another website that you think we ought to emulate, tell us. The purpose of Sanctuary Of Hope is spiritual service to the inner city. This is accomplished through spiritual guidance by you in the greater community.

Also let friends know that mailing-list entry & change can be made on the Click Here hyperlink at the bottom of the “Newsletters” page.

Call to Action By Marilyn Connolly

VOLUNTEER AS YOU CAN -- Many people cannot commit as an Associate but might be willing and able to share time, interest or talent in another. way. SOH has ongoing needs for volunteers.

A variety of tasks are accomplished on work days, the second Saturday of the month from 8 a.m. until noon, followed by lunch. Or you can choose a task and do it on your own time. Painting, carpentry, grounds keeping, housecleaning, etc. are needed. Cooking meals for staff, workers, retreatants and other guests is also much needed. Perhaps you have some other talent that you could share with us!

Can you help once a week, a month, twice a year, for special projects, be on call? If so, please call our volunteer coordinator, Jane LaPlante, at 262-5934 or SOH at 321-4673.
