OUR FACILITY’S NEEDS

We have begun the job of repairing the exterior of the building. With funds given to us in the past, we regrouted approximately 1/4 of the brickwork that required immediate attention. However, a remaining portion of the east wall, the entire north wall and a good portion of the north and south faces of the main building still require tuckpointing.

RENOVATION

In the oldest portion of the building, one of three floors has already been renovated to house some of our live-in staff. The two remaining floors will also be used to house staff and thus expand our ability to serve the community with more staff to facilitate retreats and more space for prayer. Renovation of these spaces includes demolition of some remaining plaster and wallboard, completing plumbing and electrical renovations, replacement or extensive refurbishment of existing windows and finishing of rooms with new wallboard, patching, painting, and additional lighting and plumbing fixtures.

WINDOWS

There are 132 windows in the main building at Sanctuary of Hope. Some of these are more than 105 years old, most are at least eighty years old, and virtually all of them require some immediate attention. This attention includes replacement of cracked panes, recaulking, replacement of glazing compound, replacement of ropes and/or counterweights, replacement of screens and/or storm windows and repainting and varnishing. While complete replacement with energy efficient windows is our dream, and our initial renovation of live-in quarters did replace a few of the oldest and worst of our windows, we need to at least make some basic improvements in the ability to simply open and close and improve the weatherproofing of the existing windows.

KITCHEN

Thanks to generous donations this past year, we were able to begin the renovation of our kitchen. The kitchen space was expanded; a new stove, new

pot washing sinks, new commercial refrigerator and freezer were purchased and electrical and plumbing improvements were made. This leaves only a few improvements needed to complete the task. Primary among these needs is an exhaust hood with fire extinguishing system above the stove. Also in order to keep foods served to large groups maintained at the proper temperatures, a cold serving table, a hot serving table and an ice machine are also needed.

HEAT

While the boiler, installed in 1987, is regularly serviced and maintained, and seems to be doing well, the piping and radiator system is in need of repair. Also in order to reduce our heating bills, ideally the heat should be controlled by individual thermostat controls at the radiators in each room. Cost for such controls are $50 each.

ELECTRICAL

The main electrical service to the building was replaced and new main distribution panels were installed in 1999 and 2000. Some of the smaller

electrical distribution panels have also been replaced as we have renovated space within the building. There is, however, still a need to replace older wiring and fuse boxes in the building to help minimize the potential of electrical overloads, shorts and related fires. Also, electrical power is needed for safety and security outside the building. Lighting at our entrance drive, along some of the walkways, in our garages and the screened patio will enhance the safety, security and usability of our facilities.

FUTURE AIR CONDITIONING

We understand that air conditioning is not an essential need at our facility. Yet, while we can accommodate small groups and a few individuals during the  summer months, we remain closed to most group retreats and many individuals who cannot or will not use our facilities unless they are air

conditioned. The day room, living room, office, staff bedrooms and a few overnight retreat rooms are maintained at reasonable temperature and humidity levels by means of window units. The remainder of the building, including the kitchen and dining room remain without air conditioning.Installation of air conditioning would take place in five building "zones". For instance, the dining room, kitchen, and day room would likely comprise one zone, the northeast wing of the building another , each zone would have its own compressor, duct work, and fan system.

MISCELLANEOUS NEEDS

Not all needs are on such a large scale. Others ways that you can help are to provide funds, material or your assistance in meeting the following needs: New mattresses & Box Springs; Full size bed frames; new sheets, pillow cases and
